Cambodia Vacation July 2010

July 26, 2011

Destination : Siem Reap / Phnom Pehn, Cambodia

Vacation from 25th July 2010 till 1st Aug 2010 ( 7 days holidays )

This trip was planned with at least 2 months ahead with two of the friends of mine, Yip & Cheah. We flew from Singapore to Siem Reap, the place that we stayed most days.

Still remembered once we got checked in to the Hotel, immediately we went out to rent a bicycle and round the town, we even reached the place that we got hour 3 days tour to the AngKor Wat – this is the main place for this trip

From Wiki

Angkor Wat (Khmer: អង្គរវត្ត) is a temple complex at Angkor, Cambodia, built for the king Suryavarman II in the early 12th century as his state temple and capital city. As the best-preserved temple at the site, it is the only one to have remained a significant religious centre since its foundation – first Hindu, dedicated to the god Vishnu, then Buddhist. It is the world’s largest religious building.[1] The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmerarchitecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country’s prime attraction for visitors. Angkor Wat combines two basic plans of Khmer temple architecture: the temple mountain and the later galleried temple, based on early South Indian Hindu architecture, with key features such as the Jagati. It is designed to represent Mount Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology: within a moat and an outer wall 3.6 kilometres (2.2 mi) long are three rectangular galleries, each raised above the next. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers. Unlike most Angkorian temples, Angkor Wat is oriented to the west; scholars are divided as to the significance of this. The temple is admired for the grandeur and harmony of the architecture, its extensive bas-reliefs, and for the numerous devatas (guardian spirits) adorning its walls.

The modern name, Angkor Wat, means “City Temple”; Angkor is a vernacular form of the word nokor (នគរ), which comes from the Sanskrit word nagar (नगर), meaning capital or city. Wat is the Khmer word for temple. Prior to this time the temple was known as Preah Pisnulok, after the posthumous title of its founder,Suryavarman II.

Personal observation of Angkor Wat, it is a huge Temple that created long long time ago that was 12th century ago, but these building look absolutely stunning, if you like ancient  building, architecture, statues, this is the place for you.

We really enjoyed, and taking our own sweet time to take some good photos, in order to take a good sunrise photos of AngKor Wat, we woke up at 5AM in the morning, took a day tuk-tuk to the place, it took approximately 20 minutes to the place( it is about 5KM), we were so surprise they are so many tourist already onsite waiting. Without waiting we got down from tuk-tuk straight go inside of AngKor Wat. We spent few hours on this site.

That pretty much all day spent on AngKor Wat

The next two days we have visited Ta Prohm, the well know movies “Tomb Raider” and Indiana Jones” were firmed here, a Buddhist temple surround by giant tree – another outstanding building were created in 11th Century

There are some others Temples, i Just cant remember… well i will continue writing once i do recall..

We took a 5-6 hours bus journey to Phnom Pehn from Siem Reap, we Spent one and half day on this site; there is not much interesting places here, peoples here a much more cunning or should i say smart when they seeing tourist, and some of them are good command english, travel to this place is not a issue if you concern that the local here do not speck english…

Still remembered we did some short tour to the popular places in Phom Pehn, such “Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum”

The site is a former high School which was used as the notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21) by Khmer Rouge communist regime from its rise to power in 1975 to its fall in 1979. Tuol Sleng means “Hill of the poisonous Trees”

Prison cell, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Vietnam 16-23 July 2011

July 26, 2011

7 days ago I am Multi-millionaire, now i am broke – Money well spent

A seven days trip to Ho Chi Minh, Ho Chi Minh City, My Tho, Can Tho(Mekong Delta), Nha Trang and end at Dalat

This trip its a little bit different from the last few trips, I traveling alone to see the world, for this seven days i choosen Vietnam as my destination, being just seven days it is just not enough to travel all around Vietnam
Therefore this time traveled to Ho Chi Minh,
and up north west Nha Trang( Coast line) and to the west of it Dalat ( highland)

In Short:
=======
Singapore – > Malaysia KL LCCT – > HCMC – > My Tho – > Can Tho – > Nha Trang – > Dalat – > HCMC – > Malaysia KL LCCT – > Singapore

On this trip, I got to know a lot of great great peoples being on the web or physically and they are from around the world, they were sharing and they are communicated. On 16th July 2011 @8PM, I started with Ho Chi Minh City,
Reached the HCMC’s airport at about 8PM, proceed to second floor for taxi that has good reputation that use meter system (Mai Linh or VinaSun) – instructed the Taxi driver where I wanted to go, after approximately 30minutes We reached town at the main road and the while Taxi driver was trying to explain me the direction, someone local walked over offered his help and he talked to Taxi Driver, and I show him the address, then he directed me across the road and walked toward the narrow alley, after some 3 minutes i saw the Hotel and did a checked in and proceed clean up. This is a very nice / friendly family business hotel, Miss Thang who was the one taken care all my booking and tour; here is the address

Hotel Address: Huang Phong 2 Hotel
241/32 Pham ngu Lao
District 1 – Pham Ngu Lao

Here is the photo of the Lady Miss Thang that manage the Hotel

Miss Thang, Huang Phong 2 Hotel

Pham Ngu Lao – the street name – popular for backpackers, there are numbers of guest house/hotel around that area

after cleaned up went out for short walk around and dinner, during that time i was so worried i will lost, as I can’t understand the sign/words of the street. What I did was just remembered the road direction that I have walked by..hew….

There are numbers of Pub, restaurants around Pham Ngu Lao street, there are all within walking distances and there is also a park just across the main road

First day observation – in fact less than half day
Saigon = Ho Chi Minh City
“Saigon” is the name local use to refer the city to, now a day tourist do the same too.
A busy city just like the others city in the world, but this time i see it myself there are so many motorbike on the road, what scary me most is that there are on opposite direction from Singapore/ Malaysia, left handed drive, at first is seem confused, after sometimes I got used to it.

17th July 201 – 2nd day
This morning woke up late, as i am traveling just myself, so i took my own sweet time, login to my laptop(I was very glad to bring along my laptop) , check internet, check interest places that i can visit in this city that must within 4KM ratios

All set, walked out from the Hotel, and had my first “Pho Bo” along the street. continue walking along the street.. at this time numbers of peoples approached me to take their motorbike tour, trishaw tour, after numbers of people tried and it was hot then i decided to listen to one of the trishaw guide, He has got a reasonable english command, we started the first stop to

1. War Remnants Museum
2. Post station
3. Independence Palace
4. Saigon River
5. Ben Thanh Market

About 2 hours and 15 minutes tour

Nothing much interesting, head back to hotel check out the tour package tour to Mekong Delta/River 1 night stay( The Hotel said can just bring minimum item that you need to Mekong, and the big bag can keep at her place, this was what i did) .
Mekong Delta is the Main place that is always in my planned, that is to see the giant Mekong River uses as one of the main transport system for the local, more interestingly the Floating Market…. where local doing trading..

Paid 490,000 Mekong trip ( i night stay)

18th July 2011 – 3rd day
@08:00 – Got out from the Hotel; Met a Nice guy from Russia Victor, he stay in the same Hotel as me, we got to know each others better during the journey
@08:05 – A lady from the Tour bring us to the meet up place at ” TM Brothers kafe”
@08:23 – Depart from Ho Chi Minh City – with a mini bus that carry 24 people, surprisingly the local tour guide name” Ken” is doing a good job in explaining a little bit about history of Vietnam and the places we would go.
Approximately 2 hours journey we reached the city of usually tourist does for one day tour, ” My Tho” – the tour guide brought us straight to the dock, proceeding Motor boat ride

The boat ride not so much fun, The boat ride bring us from one island to another, to the place to see the local selling Honey, Banana Wine, Live snake show experiences. Next island stop “Hao Ai” hopefully i got the name right, as this is what i can remembered, we had lunch at this stop..

That pretty much for the 1st day trip for Mekong

Lunch Time 1pm – > 2:15pm
@14:15 – Head back to Motor Boat procceed back to dock
Start another Bus journey from My Tho to Can Tho(Floating Market)

@17:30hrs – reached the Hotel of Can Tho City

Stay one night here

19th Jul 2011 – 4th day

Woke in the morning at 6AM, met at another hotel lobby, the same place that we got down here( about 2 minutes walk from the hotel we stayed)

Had a breakfast that part of the tour package…, surprisingly we don’t have to travel more by land, there is a dock pretty close to the hotel it was approximately 5 minutes walk, got up to the boat start the 2nd day boat tour, I was so excited for the floating market…

@7:30 – Travel for about 30 minutes, the boat stop in the middle of the river  to wait  for the home stay people coming from another boat.. All are on the boat this time, continue our journey to the Floating Market, the ride took about 20 minutes to reach the Floating Market, we are finally there.. @8:00AM the day was so Hot already, it is like the Sun is already on top of us, and i can also see some boat are heading back…

There are number interesting though, you can see all the small Motor boat come close to our boat to selling drinks and some others small stuff.. the way there handle the boat is so amazing, they are using their leg to turn the Motor boat direction..

And I did shot some good photos on this site

Floating Market, Mekong Delta, Can Tho, Vietnam

Pumpkins any one

As i said, the Floating market is not what I expected, is not that busy, perhaps that’s not the right timing , we reached there it is already numbers of boat is heading back and another reason is that it is already too hot at that  time..

That’s pretty much about Floating Market

We head back the Hotel and had our own lunch and depart from the Hotel back to Ho Chi Minh by bus that is about 4 hours bus journey from Can Tho to Ho Chi Minh city; we reached Ho Chi Minh City about 16:30hrs; Victor accompany to the travel agency to check if there are bus available to goto Nha Trang, 2nd thought bus is not a safe options as it is night ride, I would rather take train to Nha Trang, Back to the Miss Thang Hotel asked her about the options, and told that Train ticket is not easy to get, usually we need to buy the ticket in advance, but she did help me to find a way.

She did found me a way to got to train by getting the train staffs cabin; so that’s pretty much confirmed but we have get to train station early. As Miss Trang also allowed me to take a shower in her hotel, did all cleaned up, and she has her sister “Chau” accompany me to the train station to talk to the train staffs regards to the arrangement, we reached the train station at 21:30hrs, Chau is very helpful person, she even continue to check if the counter still selling train ticket but without much luck, we waited till 23:00hrs train arrived, Chau was non stop talking to the train staffs, finally we got a cabin, but i have to share with another guy; another good guy, his name KIM, he is also heading to Nha Trang

Here is Kim

Kim - Nha Trang, Vietnam

Kim - Nha Trang, Vietnam

The journey took me about 7 hours, reached Nha Trang Train station at 20th July 2011 @ 6:00hrs

20th Jul 2011 – @6:00hrs – 5th day

Kim brought me together to get up to the taxi and towards the tourist spot where are numbers of Hotel, Kim stop at the Hotel he is staying, it was a two star Hotel it is very near to the beach/coast line, I am also decided to take up a room from the same Hotel per nigh 25USD but i have to wait till 9AM only there will be available, decided to wait for that room, While waiting Kim asked for Break Fast – had a beef noodle and i  have Kim photo shot as above.

Went back to Hotel wait for the room become available, while waiting asked Hotel Manager for advise on next destination ” DaLat” – according to him DaLat is over developed and expensive, and also asked him about the tour package in Nha Trang; he suggested Water tour or land tour, i choose land tour by a private mini 7 seater car over the water tour( as i read about bad comments on the Water tour) and paid 780,000VND ( 38USD). at the same time booked a flight ticket from DaLat to Ho Chi Minh City via www.Vetnamairlines.com ( paid 56USD )

But In fact the road tour is not that fantastic either, the weather was so hot; , the bad part is that the tour guide also cum driver he don’t really speck much English, following are the places the tour covered

1. Bao Dai villas Museum – Not interesting

2. Long Son pagoda

3.Chong Rock

4. Po Nagar Cham Towers

5. Cho Dam Market

I found Nha Trang not interesting then decided to  moved, once reached the Hotel after the above tour, talked to the Hotel Mnager to get me a Bus Ticket to DaLat tomorrow

21st July 2011 – a new destination – DaLat

Checked out the Hotel at 12:00hrs – the BUS company arranged a Van to pick us up to the Bus Stop location. On the Bus i got to know a local name “Hai” he is from Hanoi, He spoke reasonable good English and he is a business man that traveled to Singapore frequently.A friendly guy to talk to, He even passed me the name card

OK, lets back to the journey, the total Bus journey took about 4hours and half, We reached the Da Lat Bus station. Finally this is the weather I am looking for, it is so cooling, approximately 20C. At the Bus Station where there is free shuttle mini van send all the passengers to the down town Hotel; Okay this time i did not book the Hotel in advance; so i just name one of the Hotel near the town area, to my surprise the Hotel is Full, so i walked to another hotel( there are number of hotel on the same street) I have walked to 3 hotels but all of them are all fully booked, by that time i was a little anxious what if no Hotel room available, I may have some luck the forth one there is a room available but it is only available for one day, so i took it and checked in 10USD, put down bags, and walk to down town, to check on Hotel for next day, to my surprise the first hotel that I walked in they said yes there is room available for tomorrow, so i told the Hotelier to reserve a room for me  tomorrow morning, walked out the Hotel approached my EasyRider for a tour by motorbike, the guy talked to me for some times, i was hesitate to confirm that as they are number of copycat / freelance and not sure which one is genuine and the tour fees doesn’t come cheap, they asked for 35USD cover most the tour agencies covered plus they claims that they are actually cover the whole Da Lat, going from direction, and coming from another.. finally decided the, price negotiated to 30USD, confirmed meet them at the same place tomorrow at 9AM.

continue to have a short walk in the city and dinner, there is restaurant  was recommended by the easyrider crew, that about 600m walk from the Hotel, decided to give it a try on the local food, cant really recall the restaurant name, i would said the food is average good not fantastics

Here what I found to shoot in the Restaurant

A cute young lady in a full gear, Da Lat Vietnam

A cute young lady in a full gear, Da Lat Vietnam

A full little girl is fully prepared with mask and jacket ready to go out with her parent by motorbike.. she so cute keep running around in the restaurant and talking..

Finished up the dinner continue walk to the town, here i realized they are lots of local tourist coming here,  perhaps because of the cool weather here, and the city is so busy with human.. walked passes a Banh Mi shop, take away one, head back to Hotel

http://www.easyrider-dalat.com

22nd July 2011 – DaLat

@09:00 – checked out from the first Hotel, and checked in to another Hotel; had a breakfast next door and heading to the easyrider shop, now the guy suppose to deal with he already left for new job, they is this colleague talk to me, and finally assigned another guy to accompany me, his name David, we started the Dalat Countryside tour about 10AM. we stopped and several stop, David almost stop at the scenic place for me to take pictures; following are the places covered

23rd July 2011 – Dalat – > Airport

Woke up at 4:45AM and prepared got out from the Hotel at 5:15AM, walked to the place David and I agreed to meet on, but at 5:20AM still didn’t see him, I was anxious at that time, the main road was so quiet, hardly see any cars/motorbikes passes, waited for few minutes there was a Mai Linh Taxi passes and flagged, I am in luck the Taxi stopped, tell him the destinations and proceed to Dalat Airport, the journey takes about 30 minutes, reached Airport around 5:50HRS, the counter was not open yet…waited till 6:30HRS and checkin and ready to fly to Ho Chi Minh City.

Mount Bromo, Indonesia 26th Sep2010

October 8, 2010

Mount Bromo, East Java Indonesia, one of the well known places..

Without much planned ahead, my friend and I decided to gave it a tried; going to Mount Bromo the nearest Airport is Surabaya at East Java, Airport name “Junanda Airport”

We departed from Singapore on the 26th Sep 2010 Value Air under Jetstar management; Flight Number VF547 at 1305hrs, we reached Surabaya Juanda Airport at 1525hrs(GMT +8), local time is 1425hrs ( GMT +7 behind 1 hour), The Airport is simple unlike Singapore Terminal is huge and systematic.

Food in the Airport:
Please be aware local food shop food is expensive; i had a coffee ice for the price of 12000k
Fast food prices is reasonable, eg. AmW

We took a Shuttle bus from the Juanda Airport to the downtown, in fact is not really a downtown, it is still south 10Km from the city; we decided to stay here for one night and take a bus to Probolinggo the next day morning, this journey took us 2:30 minutes by an Express AC bus, this please is a transis place to Mount Bromo, according to Lonely planet not a ideal place to stick around and it is a small village, Reached Probolinnggo Bus Terminal at 13:30hrs.

Inorder to go up to the Hill from Probolinnggo Bus Terminal to the Hill site, we switched to MiniVan, yes this is the only transport go up to the Hill; according to the Bus Terminal guys( work as a middle man) the miniVan will depart every 30 minutes or when the full car is fully occupied the only it will get going; standard fare is 25000k RP; but we paid 40000k RP per person as we waited for 2 hours we could only get 8 persons. Took us an hour to reached to the Hotel we booked at Yoschi Hotel stand 1700m high above sea level, this please is recommended by most backpackers, to go up to the hill you can either by walk or four wheels drive cars, we choose four wheels drive car; this car can hold 6 persons, the hotel book a jeep for us to go up to the hill the next day morning at 3:30hrs; yes 3:30hrs, i still remembered when we been to AngkorWat we woke up at 5:00hrs for the sunrise.., this time is much more early..

Reached first view site within an hour, this is actually peak of the Gunung Penanjakan (at 2770m above sea level) this is in fact the highest… the temperature was sub 10C, please ensure you have jacket that can take care this temperatures.., the view is impressive nice.. where you could see a straight line orange light come up gradually starting from 5AM local time, looking down to the Mount Bromo, Mount Batok and etc,  photography is difficult, as it is crowded with tourist, we spent almost 2 hours in there and moved forward to another view point, this one is rather lower spot, reached this one about 5 minutes, we spent 15 minutes here, and then proceed to the last view point the steep lip of the crater and hen over to Laotian Pasir (Sand Sea) to the base of the Bromo. climb up to the peak required some 45minutes, the last portion of it there are 253 steps, after that you will face to face with the steaming, sulfurous guts of the volcano

That it is for Mount Bromo

After some serious climb of Mount Bromo, the rest of the days we relax at the hotel, as there is not much interesting places around the area, unless you are adventures and willing to travel some long hour of journey to reach the next destination then there are plenty of location you could go

The other reason we did not travel to another location, we we did not plan properly before the trip

indonesian phases

Angkot: a Van modified transport

Mobil: car

Ojek: Motorbike taxi, taking only one passenger

warung: eating shop

Mount Bromo

17th July 2009 – LOB Tioman

July 22, 2009

LOB  = Live On Board, it is stay on boat kind of dive, whereby all your activities is on the boat. The boat name PP Harmony, it is Thailand Registered dive boat, the  crew are all Thai, according to my Dive Instructor this boat can hold about MAX 23 peoples. Each Cabin can stay 2 persons x 2 single beds, it has got dive platform, dining place, open deck and a reasonable spacious TV room.

The boat departed from Singapore Punggul “Marina Country Club” this place is another end of Singapore, it is remote, there is no public bus going in there, you can only take Taxi, or take the shuttle bus provided by the club, it’s depart every half hourly. We departed at 19:30hrs,  and the boat is travelling at 18~20KpH..yes imagine that you drive at this speed on the road….

Have you guys seen a “Remote immigration” as you know we are travelling out from Singapore, therefore clearence is required from Singapore, at about 21:00hrs the boat reached Immigration designated area and the captain or someone call up the “Remote Immigration” within 20 mins the Immigration boat comes, the officer will be on board for the clearence just like what we do normally on land..

On the board experience is eat, chit chat, drinks .. yeah of course  no alcohol for a discipline diver..Yeah forgotten to mentione  if you sea-sick type of person, it is advisable to takes sea-sick pills before you jump on board.

The sleep on the first day was bad, as the air-con did not work properly, due to one of the Transistor blew-off… that was a sweaty night…., imagine sleep with noisy boat engine with no air-con….wo….

This is my first time stay on the boat more than 24 hours,  i have throw-up 4 times at least and for your info, i am not really sea sick kind of persons. compare to shore dive, on the boat all thing are all set, as Rudy said “you just have to eat, drinks, sleep and dive, and all others things are done for you by the boat crew”  including dive gears set up… rinse for you the gears after each dive….this is really good idea for me… as i have assemble gears

Similar to Shore dive, each dive is about 30 minutes;

The First dive on 18th July 2009 Saturday @ 7~8AM, lead by Dive Instructor Lexter, the water is not clear as what we expected, nothing much can be seen.. my dive time is bad, my tank down to 50Bar just after about 20 mins dive, dive depth about 20 Meters so perhaps i really a high air comsuption

The Second Dive on 18th July 2009 Saturday @ 10~10:30AM, lead by Joey Dive Instructor, dive site Marine Park, Tioman, also referring to RACK diving, water clearity is bad, muddy, nothing much, deive depth 15~16Meters

The Third dive on 18th July 2009 Saturday @14:30PM, Lead by Dive Instructor Lexter, this site is better than the previous dive site, lots more reefs and fishes, this dive i hurt myself by decending too quickly.. i believe,, but this dive was the one of most enjoyable dive, we saw turtle on this dive site

The Fourth dive on 18th july 2009 saturday @ 16:30, — i was not going down for this dive, the ear block can’t be clear, suspected this was because of the previous dive, the equalisation was not properly done… so stay and watch…

The second day 19th July 2009, Sunday Pulau AUR

The First dive start at about 8AM – Lead by Lexter; this was also a good experience dive, i still using 4 x weight (8 Pounds) with tighten weight belt, bcd tighten and practiced with some Frog kick learned from yesterday 2nd dive from Joey.. , dive depth 15 Meters,  This dive also remembered me the most, as i have a bloody nose when i reached surface (Barotrauma Sinus)…and this one caused me not able to dive for the next one….

The Second dive,  due to the inffection above i have to stay on boat, i still wondering if that is really Barotrauma sinus or a Mask squeeze

Recommended song : You Fill My Heart

March 13, 2009

If you are one of the fans of One Tree Hill, you should remember this song, for those of you never heard of it, it is a very nice song to recommended to you and your friends

This is the lyric of  one of the nicer  song that i ever heard, getting from one of my favorite Americans TV series that  love  “One Tree Hill”

Singer : Jason Walker

Song name : You Fill My Heart

When I saw your face
It was like a space
In my heart was filled
It’s like I knew
From the very start
That you were every other part of me

It’s like I have loved you since
From the moment when
Since time began
You fill my heart

Oh, love of mine
Why did it take so long to find
Your touch
Hope was never gone
Even though it took so long
To find you

Because I have loved you since
From the moment when
Since time began
And I have loved you since
From the moment when
Since time began
You fill my heart

And I have loved you since
From the moment when
Since time began
And I have loved you since
From the moment when
Since time began
And I have loved you since
From the moment when
Since time began
You fill my heart

Working in a financial industry is not easy and always a challenge, every task is talking about accuracy, time line, compliant  and it is busier environment then the others field that i had worked before.

Working in this company, I’ve learned most then other companies, in term of technologies, communications, and always wanted to learn more, eagle to learn the more advance technologies

I have make a lots of friends during my tenure in the company, and always remember they are now part of my life..

Lastly, i sincerely hope the team can do best in the future.. as well the company
